FISHERS OF MEN

FISHERS OF MEN

Mark 1:17 (The Message)

“Passing along the beach of Lake Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew net-fishing. Fishing was their regular work. Jesus said to them, “Come with me. I’ll make a new kind of fisherman out of you. I’ll show you how to catch men and women instead of perch and bass (fish variety)” They didn’t ask questions. They dropped their nets and followed.”
This command is not specifically given to the Apostles only. All the disciples of Christ are commissioned to announce the good news of salvation in ways and means available to them, according to their status of life. A christian is a follower of Christ and hence becomes His disciple. God will reward us in Heaven based on how sincerely and successfully we worked for bringing souls to Christ.

YOUR MISERY IS SEEN

YOUR MISERY IS SEEN

– Sis. Stella Dhinakaran

The Dhinakarans

Make us glad according to the days in which You have afflicted us, The years in which we have seen evil.
(Psalm 90:15)

Hagar, the maid of Sarah, the wife of Abraham got an opportunity to become the wife of Abraham. However, she became proud and began to ignore her mistress. On account of her attitude, she was chased out of the house by Sarah and had to wander in wilderness. An angel of God met Hagar who was in a hopeless condition having been forsaken by men and comforted her saying, “You are now with a child and you will have a son. You shall name him Ishmael, for the Lord has heard of your misery.” Having heard this good tidings Hagar’s heart was filled with joy. She thought, “There is a God who sees me. Although people forsake me, He would never forsake me.” She who thought that her life had come to an end was thrilled to hear about the divine blessings which were in store for her through the angel of God. She shed tears of joy. She rejoiced saying, “You are a God who sees me.” Her agony came to an end that day (Genesis 16:1-16)

A godly woman who was doing God’s ministry shared her experience in the following manner. “I did not give first place to Jesus when I was young. I was just a nominal Christian. However, the Lord graciously intervened in my life and drew me towards Him. When I began to follow Him, this world branded me as ‘insane’. All my relatives began to treat me like an enemy because they could not understand the greatness of God’s love. I was left alone like an orphan. But at the same time the love of Jesus filled me with joy. Days passed by. The presence and the power of God filled me in an abundant measure. The Lord started using me mightily in the ministry. The same people who rejected me came seeking after me. Seeing the hand of God in my life everyone started honouring me. The Lord has also graciously enabled all of them to become His followers.”

Dear Friend! The Bible says, “the help of man is worthless” (Psalm 108:12, 60:11). So kindly do not place your trust on any man. Instead look to God always. When you place your trust upon a man, the Lord Himself would allow you to face agony and shame through the same man and through that He will make you understand the depth of His love for you. The Almighty and impartial God with whom nothing is impossible alone can wipe away your tears (Acts 10:34). He shall make you shed tears of joy.

Prayer:

Loving heavenly Father,

When the problems of this world are unbearable for me, help me understand that I have an Almighty God who is greater than all my problems. Give me the grace to always confess and trust that Your eyes move to and fro looking upon those with a contrite spirit. In Your immense grace and mercy give me the wisdom not to trust in the strength and power of mortal men. On this wonderful day I believe that I have an incomparable God who sees my misery and walks with me through the valley of tears letting me know the divine blessings that are in store for me. I praise and thank You with all my heart for all the goodness You have bestowed upon me. Be with me a bless me.

In the matchless name of Jesus Christ I pray.

Amen.

1 Kgs 19:19-21
Elijah set out, and came upon Elisha, son of Shaphat,

as he was plowing with twelve yoke of oxen;

he was following the twelfth.

Elijah went over to him and threw his cloak over him.

Elisha left the oxen, ran after Elijah, and said,

“Please, let me kiss my father and mother goodbye,

and I will follow you.”

Elijah answered, “Go back!

Have I done anything to you?”

Elisha left him and, taking the yoke of oxen, slaughtered them;

he used the plowing equipment for fuel to boil their flesh,

and gave it to his people to eat. Then he left and followed Elijah as his attendant.

Keep me, O God, for in you I take refuge;

I say to the LORD, “My Lord are you.”

O LORD, my allotted portion and my cup,

Gospel
Each year Jesus’ parents went to Jerusalem for the feast of Passover,

and when he was twelve years old,

they went up according to festival custom.

After they had completed its days, as they were returning,

the boy Jesus remained behind in Jerusalem,

but his parents did not know it.

Thinking that he was in the caravan,

they journeyed for a day

and looked for him among their relatives and acquaintances,

but not finding him,

they returned to Jerusalem to look for him.

After three days they found him in the temple,

sitting in the midst of the teachers,

listening to them and asking them questions,

and all who heard him were astounded

at his understanding and his answers.

When his parents saw him,

they were astonished,

and his mother said to him,

“Son, why have you done this to us?

Your father and I have been looking for you with great anxiety.”

And he said to them,

“Why were you looking for me?

Did you not know that I must be in my Father’s house?”

But they did not understand what he said to them.

He went down with them and came to Nazareth,

and was obedient to them;and his mother kept all these things in her heart

Ez 34:11-16
Thus says the Lord GOD:

I myself will look after and tend my sheep.

As a shepherd tends his flock

when he finds himself among his scattered sheep,

so will I tend my sheep.

I will rescue them from every place where they were scattered

when it was cloudy and dark.

I will lead them out from among the peoples

and gather them from the foreign lands;

I will bring them back to their own country

and pasture them upon the mountains of Israel

in the land’s ravines and all its inhabited places.

In good pastures will I pasture them,

and on the mountain heights of Israel

shall be their grazing ground.

There they shall lie down on good grazing ground,

and in rich pastures shall they be pastured

on the mountains of Israel.

I myself will pasture my sheep;

I myself will give them rest, says the Lord GOD.

The lost I will seek out,

the strayed I will bring back,

the injured I will bind up,

the sick I will heal,

but the sleek and the strong I will destroy,

shepherding them rightly.

Responsorial Psalm
R. (1) The Lord is my shepherd; there is nothing I shall want.

The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.

In verdant pastures he gives me repose;

beside restful waters he leads me;

he refreshes my soul.

R. The Lord is my shepherd; there is nothing I shall want.

with your rod and your staff

that give me courage.

Brothers and sisters:

The love of God has been poured out into our hearts

through the Holy Spirit that has been given to us.

For Christ, while we were still helpless,

died at the appointed time for the ungodly.

Indeed, only with difficulty does one die for a just person,

though perhaps for a good person

one might even find courage to die.

But God proves his love for us

in that while we were still sinners Christ died for us.

How much more then, since we are now justified by his blood,

will we be saved through him from the wrath.

Indeed, if, while we were enemies,

we were reconciled to God through the death of his Son,

how much more, once reconciled,

will we be saved by his life.

Not only that,

but we also boast of God through our Lord Jesus Christ,

through whom we have now received reconciliation.
Lk 15:3-7
Gospel
Jesus addressed this parable to the Pharisees and scribes:

“What man among you having a hundred sheep and losing one of them

would not leave the ninety-nine in the desert

and go after the lost one until he finds it?

And when he does find it,

he sets it on his shoulders with great joy

and, upon his arrival home,

he calls together his friends and neighbors and says to them,

‘Rejoice with me because I have found my lost sheep.’

I tell you, in just the same way

there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents

than over ninety-nine righteous people

who have no need of repentance.”

REMINDING GOD OF HIS PROMISES

REMINDING GOD OF HIS PROMISES

“But you did say, ‘I will make sure that you are prosperous and that your descendants will be as many as the grains of sand on the seashore. No one will be able to count them because there are so many.” Gen.32:12

The Bible says that we should petition God for all our needs. God knows all our needs even before they arise and even before we ourselves became aware of them. Then why does God want us to make our petitions known to him ? Moreover the Word says that we should remind God of His promises in the Bible whenever we petition Him. Is God like human beings, forgetful ?.It is just that God wants us to be ever mindful of him for our own good.We should constantly depend on God and meditate on God’s nature and qualities, which wil help us to increase our love and affection for him. This attitude on our part towards God will strenghten our faith level and sustain us in our spiritual journey. This spiritual journey is ultimately aimed in attaining everlasting life with God. God is love and provides for all our needs at the right time.We should not worry or be anxious. We are expected to trust God and perform our duties to the best of our ability. God will prosper our efforts and giv us the success according to His promise.

THE SECRET OF SUCCESS

June 10, 2010
THE SECRET OF SUCCESS

John 15:5
“Those who abide in me and I in them bear much fruit, because apart from me you can do nothing.”

2Peter 1:8
“For as these qualities are yours and increasingly abound in you, they will keep [you] from being idle or unfruitful unto the [[a]full personal] knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ (the Messiah, the Anointed One).”(AMP)

“So don’t lose a minute in building on what you’ve been given, complementing your basic faith with good character, spiritual understanding, alert discipline, passionate patience, reverent wonder, warm friendliness, and generous love, each dimension fitting into and developing the others. With these qualities active and growing in your lives, no grass will grow under your feet, no day will pass without its reward as you mature in your experience of our Master Jesus. Without these qualities you can’t see what’s right before you, oblivious that your old sinful life has been wiped off the books.” (The Message)

Many a time so called ‘good’ christians, particularly catholics think that it is sufficient to practice devotion to Jesus and to our Blessed Mother and to the saints. This is good in itself.
But mere devotion and formal prayers are not sufficient. This devotion and love for God should produce fruits by the grace of God.Devotion should lead to a strong faith, and faith should be evidenced by our developing good character and this in turn by relying on God’s grace should produce the fruits of the Holy Spirit in our lives. These ‘fruits’ otherwise known as christian qualities or christlikeness will not only ensure eternal life but would also equip one to lead a victorious and successful life in this world.Faith is a gift of God and faith comes from hearing the Word of God.Faith becomes strengthened and real when we become ‘doers’ of the Word of God.Therefore reading the Bible and praying sincerely is a very important first step. The next step is acting on the faith that comes from reading the Word of God.This is how the saints came close to God and were made powerful by God.This should help us to understand why so many christians particularly catholics lead a miserable existence in this world.God wants us His children to be blessed and successful in this life also.

HONOUR, PRAISE AND GLORY

– Sis. Stella Dhinakaran

The Dhinakarans
For those blessed by Him shall inherit the earth, But those cursed by Him shall be cut off.
(Psalm 37:22)

It is God who chose Abraham, David, Daniel and others as His servants. He not only chose them but He also abided with them, honoured them and showered His richest blessings on them.

The desire of God is stated in the Bible as follows: “I have caused the whole house of Israel and the whole house of Judah to cling to Me,’ says the Lord, ‘that they may become My people, for renown, for praise, and for glory” (Jeremiah 13:11). God did this to His servants because they were steadfast in their faith, during thick and thin times. When trials and tempests of life lashed them, they remained like an immovable rock in their faith. That is why He enabled them to receive His blessings and honour (Psalm 37:22).

For example, when Abraham was childless, the Lord had compassion on him and blessed him with a son. Later on, He tested Abraham for his love toward Him and found him to be true and faithful in his love for Him (Proverbs 28:20). So, He exalted him by making him rich and blessed him abundantly (Genesis 24:1, 35).

A house wife was steadfast in seeking the Lord and abiding in Him with all the members of her family. But, suddenly her husband died and she was shattered with no hope for future. She was perplexed. The next moment, she knelt at the presence of the Lord and vented the contents in her heart to Him. The Almighty God heard her prayers and filled her with His divine and perfect peace. All her worries and burdens vanished like the mist that felt the sun’s rays. She rose up like a lioness and walked as led by the Holy Spirit. God blessed her abundantly.

Again, like unexpected turn of tides, one of her son joined bad friends. He started to squander her hard earned money by indulging in evil and wrong things. Yet, she trusted the Lord with all her heart and continued to praise Him and thank Him. God in His immense grace and mercy made her son leave all his bad ways and return to his mother. God exalted and honoured this mother who sought Him diligently.

Dear Friend! Whatever be your condition, never lose heart. Seek Him and abide in Him. Remember that prayer brings victory. Pray to Him fervently and faithfully at all times. Abide in Him and lead a victorious life in this world bearing His name (1 John 5:4).

Prayer:

Loving Lord Jesus Christ!

Now I know that You abide with the poor and the humble and help them receive honour and glory. From today onwards, bless me also in the same way and lead me in Your divine path. Thank You for hearing my prayer.

In Your matchless name I pray,

Amen

1 Kgs 18:41-46
Elijah said to Ahab, “Go up, eat and drink,

for there is the sound of a heavy rain.”

So Ahab went up to eat and drink,

while Elijah climbed to the top of Carmel,

crouched down to the earth,

and put his head between his knees.

“Climb up and look out to sea,” he directed his servant,

who went up and looked, but reported, “There is nothing.”

Seven times he said, “Go, look again!”

And the seventh time the youth reported,

“There is a cloud as small as a man’s hand rising from the sea.”

Elijah said, “Go and say to Ahab,

‘Harness up and leave the mountain before the rain stops you.’”

In a trice the sky grew dark with clouds and wind,

and a heavy rain fell.

Ahab mounted his chariot and made for Jezreel.

But the hand of the LORD was on Elijah,

who girded up his clothing and ran before Ahab

as far as the approaches to Jezreel.

Jesus said to his disciples:

“I tell you, unless your righteousness surpasses that

of the scribes and Pharisees,

you will not enter into the Kingdom of heaven.

“You have heard that it was said to your ancestors,

You shall not kill; and whoever kills will be liable to judgment.

But I say to you, whoever is angry with his brother

will be liable to judgment,

and whoever says to his brother,

‘Raqa,’ will be answerable to the Sanhedrin,

and whoever says, ‘You fool,’ will be liable to fiery Gehenna.

Therefore, if you bring your gift to the altar,

and there recall that your brother

has anything against you,

leave your gift there at the altar,

go first and be reconciled with your brother,

and then come and offer your gift.

Settle with your opponent quickly while on the way to court with him.

Otherwise your opponent will hand you over to the judge,

and the judge will hand you over to the guard,

and you will be thrown into prison.

Amen, I say to you,

you will not be released until you have paid the last penny.”
